Entrance to Harry Potter in Orlando

I’ve been lucky to have visited the Wizarding World of Harry Potter in Orlando more than 4 times in the past 3 years (clearly I can’t get enough of it 😛 ).

The entrance is built at an ordinary corner, one side a bookstore called Screed & Sons and the other side is the actual entrance with a huge ‘King’s Cross’ sign through which you enter to take the Hogwarts Express.

Right in front of the entrance is the Knight’s bus complete with the driver having a conversation with a shrunken head.

Foamy Vengeance

When I think ooze, I’m reminded of a clever prank played by Sheldon Cooper from Big Bang Theory. He uses ordinary dish soap, hydrogen peroxide, and saturated potassium iodide to produce a large quantity of foam that gets bigger and bigger like a giant monster.

This is a perfect prank for Halloween (and yes it does work). I’ve had friends try it out but you have to be careful with your amounts.

DIY Harry Potter Series – Hermione’s Wand (Blogger Request)

I wasn’t planning on making any more wands since I have enough in my stash for at least 14-15 surprise wizards / witches during Halloween. This DIY is a special request by blogger Hana Elwan from my Weasley Wand DIY post. So here goes…

  1. A chopstick
  2. Acrylic Paints – Beige or Fawn, Metallic brass gold sharpie (medium fine)
  3. Hot Glue
  4. Pencil and brushes of medium thickness

  1. Use the hot glue to create the vine-and-leaves template on the stick (this is the image I used: Hermione’s wand template). Here’s an image of how the design looks (it’s a combination of swirls followed by leaves). Just repeat each vine pattern on the stick.
  2. Let the wand dry for 45 mins.
  3. Paint the entire wand with the beige / fawn. Use 2 coats and let dry in between for at least 30 mins.IMG_3341
  4. Use the gold pen to highlight the vine design and let dry ( you can also use a thin brush and gold paint instead of the pen).

I added the name Hermione at the bottom so I wouldn’t confuse it with my other wands. Once again, thank you Hana for giving me this idea to try out 🙂

Why willy-nilly?? Why not nilly-willy or willing-nilling?

Why willy-nilly and how on earth did someone come up with that combination?

The first use of this phrase was in the 1600s in the Oxford Dictionary. It was a contraction of  ‘will he, nill he’ or ‘will I, nill I’. In early English nill was the opposite of will; a contraction of ‘ne will’….as in will meant to want to do something, nill meant to want to avoid it. So, combining the willy – ‘I am willing’ and nilly – ‘I am unwilling’ expresses the idea that it doesn’t matter to me one way or the other.

Game of Thrones: Mixed Media Fan Art

With season 7 of GOT here, I wanted to temporarily fill up an empty spot above my TV with some of the key players from the season.

A very simple DIY to create. You can choose your favorite characters and customize as you please.

You will need:

  1. Silhouettes of your characters from google images (simply print on regular A4 sheets)
  2. White Canvas
  3. Pencil / Scissors / Elmer’s Glue / Thick Brush
  4. Thin / Thick Black Sharpie
  5. Color pencils – Red, yellow, orange, black, grey
  6. Champagne gold metallic acrylic paint

What you do:

  1. Arrange your silhouettes the way you want them to look on your canvas. IMG_2655
  2. Add a light coat of the acrylic paint on the canvas and let dry.
  3. Use a pencil to draw an outline of a wolf and color it grey with a bit of black. I did at the top left corner of the canvas.IMG_2656
  4. Based on your silhouette arrangement, pen the following sentences in using the same font as observed on the show’s posters and art (you can copy the font from google images). I went with …
    • King of the North
    • Kingslayer
    • Queen of the Dragons
    • Valar Morghulis
    • I drink and I know thingsIMG_2654
  5. I drew an open starburst shape and colored it with the red, orange and yellow pencils. I will be sticking the silhouette of Daenerys over it. I added a dragon over her shoulder with red flames coming out of his mouth.                                                                                                        IMG_2697
  6. I stuck all the silhouettes on using glue. Make sure you evenly brush the silhouette to remove any air bubbles. Let everything dry. IMG_2698

I added some extra detailing around Sansa… a bird, leaves and a few dots here and there (don’t know why lol). And there you have it… Your custom made fan art 😀
